A Message From Your Festival Director

That was a quick year but this years Real Ale, Jazz & Blues Festival is only a few months away. We have an exceptional line up of some of Britains creative bands and musicians. In fact we want to trumpet the quality of these simply outstanding, creative performers.

You will hear big bands, boogie woogie, blues, funk, be-bop, township jazz, swing jump and jive, exceptional trumpeters, pianists, drummers to steaming Hammond organ players.

Renew old friendships, make new friends, discover new music all in a cordial wonderful atmosphere.

The venue has excellent facilities with plenty of safe space for families to enjoy plus camping /caravans a few yards from the music, showers. catering, with 30 Real ales plus a well stocked bar and the lovely City of Lichfield only a mile away

So treat yourself to an evening, a day, or come for all the festival you deserve a break !!!

Local Favourites Kick Off The Festival 
Walsall Jazz Orchestra + Lichfield & Rugeley Jazz Orchestra - 7.30pm
 

This 20 piece all dancing, dynamic swinging big band need no introduction to Midlands fans. Formed by John Hughes, they play big band contemporary jazz by composers such as Pat Metheny, Mike Gibbs, Chick Corea but their allegiance is to their own pianist/composer Tim Amann. They have a wide range of soloists such as Sam Rogers and Nick Dewhurst and have an astounding rhythm section. You will hear a strong rock infusion element, which excites the listener young and old alike.

Lichfield and Rugeley Jazz Orchestra  

The Lichfield and Rugeley Jazz Orchestra will be opening up the festival. A very young, highly talented band which features musicians from schools in South East Staffordshire. The Directors of Music are Jenny Maudsley and Paul Bennett. You will hear jazz standards and pop tunes all played in that great spirit of youth.

Rocking Blues And Boogie-Woogie To Get You In The Groove 
Steve 'Big Man' Clayton Band - 8.00pm

 

Always a popular performer. Birmingham born but now based in Germany he brings his hard hitting blues and boogie -woogie style and his great touch of humour to entertain you. With him will be Chris Lomas (bass) and Mick Barker on drums helping to make the ivories rattle along. He is a quality performer keeping the arts of blues piano alive. You will hear classic blues, his own compositions plus favourites from Ray Charles - even one of my favourites, Blueberry Hill.

Blues with feeling and storming Boogie Woogie in a class of its own !!

You will have heard some of these fine musicians on Thursday night but just listen to their melodic, striving, original, contemporary music. They are: leader Tim Amann on piano, Carl Hemmingsley drums, Adam Gilchrist bass, Sam Rogers saxes and Ray Butcher trumpet.

Their lyrical music has a range of influences from Celtic and East European Folk music to Blues and Gospel. It is original, thought provoking but with a dynamism you would expect from a talented group of youngish musicians

Steve Ajao Blues Giants - 1.00pm & 5.15pm

 

Highly respected throughout the Midlands, this fine blues guitarist and vocalist returns after too many years of absence to the festival bringing along fine bassist Mick Hutton and drummer Pete Hammond. You will hear blues from the era of Robert Johnson to the present day. Always pushing ahead Steve never stands still. He has that rare ability to draw upon various music styles to produce immediate accessible music loved by music fans of all tastes.

Not forgetting that wonderful croaky, bluesy voice !!

Ian Shaw - 2.00pm & 6.30pm

 

Ian Shaw, one of Britain's finest jazz vocalists, was voted best vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards in 2004/2007. This dynamic performer has already amassed numerous awards in the UK and America. He is a colourful character not only a fine singer but an excellent pianist, add a great sense of humour and you get a superb entertaining concert.

After his spell -binding performance at the Guildhall last year I was told to " get him back again" in no uncertain tones. So come along and enjoy this wonderful talent.

Jay Phelps Quintet +1 - 3.00pm & 7.45pm

 

Do we have a treat in store for you with this wonderful band led by former Empirical trumpeter and also a member of Badbone & Co, Jay Phelps. His band comprise the cream of the London Jazz scene with Shabaka Hutchings tenor sax & clarinets, New York drummer Gene Calderazzo drums with the luscious bluesy tone of Karl Rasheed-Abel bass, creative pianist Jonathan Gee and on vocals Michael Mwenso. All have been members of top jazz outfits including Gary Crosby, Tomorrow's Warriors, Soweto Kinch. This creative trumpeter debut album 'The Jay Walkin' reflects his past experience of working with John Hendricks, Hugh Masekela and Wynton Marsalis but it reflects his own personal love of traditional swing to the contemporary jazz of today.

To use one quote "He is an acrobatic fiery soloist but at the same time always displaying his love of the music seen in his compositions."

The band that got everyone dancing at Fuse last year had to be brought back for the pleasure of RAJB fans. This five piece band from Harare are:

Back again after last years stunning performance, drummer/composer Asif Sirkis returns with Steve Lodder Keyboards/Church Organ and guitarist Mike Outram. This trio play fusion in a vibrant, vital, exciting and refreshing manner. The music is very accessible and engaging in a modern classical format.

Steve Waterman Trio "Buddy Bolden Blew It"- 1.00pm & 5.00pm

 

This outstanding British trumpet player brings his very distinctive trio to celebrate the music of 'Benny Bolden'. To do this with him are outstanding bassist Alec Dankworth and vibraphone player Anthony Kerr.

This is a tribute to the great American trumpet players from the early 1900's who created the stimulus of the jazz we enjoy today. It will include popular compositions of the day from Louis Armstrong's 'West End Blues' to Bix Beiderbecke 'In a Mist' but with fine original arrangements. Thoughtful, inventive and very rewarding this is an outstanding contribution to the past and present by this outstanding trio of musicians.

John Law OPT Trio - 2.00pm & 6.00pm

 

John Law is recognised as one of Europe's most interesting pianists. His latest concept formed only last year is to explore other peoples tunes (OPT). He mixes jazz standards with tunes from the likes of Pat Metheny, Sting, Nick Drake to Stevie Wonder, adding his own very special arrangements aided by that man again Asaf Sirkis (drums) and Steve Watts (double bass).

This is the trio at its best playing straight ahead, swinging groovy jazz

Nigel Price Organ Trio - 3.00pm & 7.00pm

 

The Nigel Price Organ Trio - winners of the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards for “best jazz ensemble” - is led by one of Britain’s finest guitarists Nigel Price - ex James Taylor Quartet and also a regular performer at Ronnie Scott’s. His blend of flowing bebop lines, blues feeling and the will to swing has made him instantly accessible and popular with jazz audiences.

Phenomenal drummer Matt Home has toured with Barry Harris,Herb Geller,Scott Hamilton,Howard Alden Ken Peplowski,Jim Mullen, and many others.He is also a house band regular at Ronnie Scott's club and spent 3 years with Ray Gelato.

Dynamic organist Pete Whittaker, one of the few players who actually brings the real thing to gigs (wherever access allows!!), has been involved with many jazz projects including Theo Travis' "Double Talk" and guitarist John Etheridge's "Blue Spirits".

The band will be playing hard swinging jazz including material from the latest album “Heads” (described in one review as: "Unpretentious swinging fun played with skill and verve") and also from the recent album “Nigel Price Organ Trio – Live!” (Jazzizit records) which is in the top ten jazz albums of 2010 in the Evening Standard and Mojo magazine.

King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys - 9.00pm

 

Time to party with this great six piece explosive Jump & Jive band.

They need little introduction to their many local fans but just in case you have forgotten they are: Leader 'Slim Line' King Pleasure vocals/saxes, Boysie Battrum saxes, Bullnose Shirley guitar, Dave Wilkes drums, Shark Van Schtoop double bass and barnstorming pianist Crab-Claw Tromans.

They simply get better and better - come and join them.

The venue has excellent facilities, including showers and toilets and is also disabled-friendly with toilets and wheel chair access to all areas.

Bars Besides the real ale bar, which will have 30 beers plus a range of traditional ciders, the Rugby Club's own bar will have a full range of lagers, wines and soft drinks.

Catering A full range of snacks, from cakes to a full menu, will be available including vegetarian options and of course 'The Famous Pork Pies'
